Backyard Composting Program
Through the Act 101 grant program, administered by the
Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Wayne County developed a Backyard
Composting Display Area, which is on display at the Wayne County Recycling Center.
Visitors can view the many different types of manufactured or homemade composting devices,
which are on display. Literature regarding the various devices, as well as composting in
general can be obtained at the Center by those that are interested.
Wayne County has utilized Act 101 grant funding to purchase
back yard composters, which are available to Wayne County citizens for a nominal fee.
These Earth Machines have been sold every year, since 1995, generally in the
spring. This program has been very successful in providing county residents with an
opportunity to not only take much of their yard waste out of the waste stream, but to turn
it into a useful product.
Christmas Tree Recycling
Each year after Christmas, the Recycling Center
accepts old Christmas trees from county residents. Thanks to the donation of a chipper
from a local businessman, the trees are chipped into mulch, which is available to
residents free of charge.

facility for processing and marketing. Commercial recycling programs within Honesdale
Borough utilize both the County facility and private waste haulers.
Honesdale Borough residents that have questions
pertaining to the curbside program should contact the Borough office at: 253-0731.
